Substitution Protocols…Different circumstances in the game will result in different officials handling substitution requests.  It does not matter who is handling a substitution process (and in some cases, this responsibility may be passed from one official to another as after a made free throw).  The responsibilities are the same.

The responsible official shall display the Stop clock signal until the process is completed and the number of players on the court has been verified.  The palm of the hand being used should face the official who is responsible for resuming play.  The process being completed means that the replaced players have left the floor and are in their bench area.

Some of us are raising our hand at the beginning of the substitution process and then are dropping it as soon as the players start onto the floor.  This can lead to problems with too many players on the floor when the ball is put into play.

We have all seen the situation where a player still on the floor approaches the bench and the coach yells “Not you!.”  Someone else then runs to the bench.  By keeping our hand up until the process is complete, that is, all the replaced players have left the playing court, we will avoid messy situations on the court.

Free Throw Positioning-Trail…Three Person Crew…When the ball will remain dead after the free throw, the Trail should position near the center circle.  From this position, the Trail is available to the table and to identify subs who will enter before the final free throw attempt.

When the ball will remain live after the final free throw, normally the Trail should position near the 28 foot mark (the end of the coaching box).  In some situations the Trail may need to position adjust away from the 28-foot mark to provide adequate coverage.

Some of us are staying near or at the division line all the time.  This is not correct.

Tip

Throw-in Reminders

  • The administering official should always be out of bounds.
  • Never bounce the ball across the basket line on an end line throw-in.
