Questions…Some questions that I received recently…

Overtime Protocols…

We all work games in various scenarios and organizations.  In some the emphasis is on keeping to a schedule.  This is true of almost all the travel ball that we are involved in.  However, school ball is different.

For School Ball…

Timeouts…Unused timeouts carry over.  One 60 second timeout is added for each overtime period that occurs.  Example:  Team A has 3 timeouts left at the end of regulation.  One 30 and two 60 second timeouts.  Team B has no timeouts left.  For the 1st overtime period, Team A will have three 60-second timeouts and one 30-second timeout available.  Team B will have one 60-second timeout.

Team Fouls…All overtimes are an extension of the fourth quarter.  As such, team fouls DO NOT RESET.

Period Start…Each overtime period starts with a jump ball.  Since this is an extension of the fourth quarter, the teams continue in the same direction.  Please make sure that the jumpers are facing in the correct direction.

End of Game…The game continues until one team is ahead at the end of an overtime period.  There is no such thing as sudden victory in school ball.

Injury Protocols…

When a player is injured momentarily and is able to resume activities relatively quickly without anyone coming on the floor to assist, there is no action for the official to rule on.  However, if an official waves for someone from the bench to come onto the floor, then standard injury protocols come into play.  Those protocols require the player to be replaced unless the team takes a timeout(s) and the player is ready to resume play at the end of said timeout(s).

If a member of the bench comes onto the floor without being beckoned, the same protocols must be followed.  It does not matter who comes onto the floor to attend the injured player.  It could be the head coach, an assistant coach, the trainer, the principal, etc.  The result is the same.  The player must be replaced unless the team takes a timeout(s) and the player is ready to resume play at the end of said timeout(s).

Ejections…

If a player or coach is ejected, a report must be filled out for the SCHSL.  You can access the form below.  This report needs to be filed by 12 noon the day after the ejection.  Please stick to the facts.  Do not add any opinions about what should happen to the ejected person(s) or about their behavior.

You must notify Charles Powell that you have had an ejection.  This should be done as soon as possible after the game.
