End of Quarter Whistles…I have received a number of questions regarding the sounding of a whistle at the end of quarters. The only time an official should sound a whistle at the end of a quarter or overtime period is to indicate that a try was not released in time or when a violation (e.g. traveling) occurred before the ball was released.

Tip…This is an important update to the procedures for throw-in spots from the NFHS. If the throw-in is the AP throw-in at the start of the period or as a result of a technical foul and a throw-in violation occurs, the ensuing throw-in should be from the same place, that is, from the division line opposite the table. In these situations do not use the 28-foot mark on the sideline. In all other situations the “magic” spots should be used unless the violation is the ball going out of bounds.
