2009-2010 - South Carolina Points of
Emphasis - Issue 4
"Working together, we will all get better."
Welcome to
the Points of Emphasis page for basketball for the South Carolina
Basketball Officials Association. The purpose of this page is to
communicate information to all basketball officials regarding items and
issues that need to be addressed in connection with basketball
officiating across the state. This page will be published on an as
needed basis.
Commissioner's Notes - Watch what you say on the Internet,
whether it is a blog, chat room, comments, etc. There are parents,
students and others reading what is said and some have taken the time to
call/email the High School League office reporting that there are
"officials" making inappropriate comments about coaches, teams, schools
and players. At least one has retained an attorney to look into such
comments. Be advised that if the High School League office receives
copies of such comments, the official will be subject to dismissal as an
official. We simply do not need this sort of problem in high school
officiating.
SCBOA Note - Due to an increase in the fees to register with NFHS
from $12 to $17, the registration fee for next season (2010-2011) will
be $50. The registration fee also includes SCBOA dues of $10 and the
SCHSL booking fee of $23. These remain unchanged from last season.
Traveling - Two additional plays illustrating traveling are shown
below. In Play #1 #20 catches a pass with his left foot as his pivot. He
takes a long step with his right foot, picks up his left foot and places
it back on the floor. Ruling: traveling violation. In Play #2 the post
player (#33) catches the ball with his right foot on the floor. He steps
forward with his left foot and then picks up his right foot. He puts it
back on the floor next to the left foot. The lead official correctly
rules a traveling violation.
