Play #1 - During the pre-game warm-ups A5 dunks the ball. What is the correct procedure?
Answer: A5 is charged with a technical foul. The head coach is also charged with an indirect technical foul for the actions of A5. Team A starts the game with one team foul. The game will begin with any starter or eligible substitute from Team B attempting two free throws followed by a division line throw-in for Team B opposite the table. The AP arrow will be set to Team A's basket when the ball is placed at the disposal of Team B for the throw-in. The coach of Team A has lost the right to use the optional coaching box. Play #2 - B1 commits his fifth personal foul. The table fails to notify the officials that B1 has 5 fouls. B1 remains in the game and subsequently scores a basket. During the next stoppage of the clock the table discovers that B1 has been playing with 5 fouls. The official notifies the coach and obtains a substitute. The official also rules that the basket scored by B1 will count and that no penalty will be assessed to Team B for B1 participating after having received his fifth foul. Was the official correct?
Answer: The official was correct. By rule B1 is not disqualified until Team B's coach has been notified. Any activity that B1 participates in until that happens is legal. (References: Rule 4.14.2, Case Book Play 10.5.4a)
Play #3 - Near the end of the second overtime period A3 is awarded two free throws with his team leading by 1 point. A3 misses the first free throw. After the lead official has bounced the ball toward A3 and before A3 catches the ball, the coach of Team B requests and is granted a timeout by the trail official. Was the official correct?
Answer: The official was correct. By rule either team may request timeout while the ball is dead. The ball does not become live on a free throw until it is in control of the free thrower or it has been placed at his disposal at the free throw line. (References: Rule 5.8.3b, Rule 8.1.1, Rule 4.4.7)
Play #4 - With 11.5 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter the coach of team A requests and is granted a timeout while A1 is dribbling in the backcourt after the 10 second backcourt count had reached 7. On the ensuing throw-in A1 is unable to find an open teammate and requests a timeout. The covering official grants the request. The other official states that successive timeouts are not permitted. After the officials get together and discuss the situation, the timeout is allowed to stand. Were the officials correct?
Answer: The officials were correct. Successive timeouts are permitted at any time during the game except after the expiration of time for the 4th quarter or any overtime period. (References: Rule 5.12.3)
Play #5 - A1 inbounds to A2 in the backcourt. A2 gets confused, goes the wrong way and scores in Team B's basket. The score is counted for Team B. B1 then inbounds the ball to B2 who scores in Team B's basket. The official then blows the whistle to stop play. The basket scored by A2 in Team B's basket is counted. The basket scored by B2 is disallowed and the ball is administered to Team A anywhere along the end line for a throw-in. Were the officials correct?
Answer: All of what the officials did was correct. Since there clearly was confusion Team B would not be penalized with a technical foul. Team A would be allowed to move along the end line during the throw-in since Team B just had a basket scored in their goal. However, in addition to what the officials did, the referee also needed to put "consumed" time back on the clock. (References: Case Book Play 10.1.8, Rule 7.5.7)
