2007-2008 - Plays of the Week - Week 7

"Working together, we will all get better."

The plays/questions described below occurred recently and are provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

Play #1 - During the 3rd quarter A1 attempts the last of two free throw attempts. A3 is positioned outside the 3 point arc halfway between the top of the key and the free throw line extended. A3 violates by crossing the 3 point arc early. The official sounds his whistle, calls the violation and designates the throw-in spot as being on the sideline nearest to where A3 crossed the three point arc. Was the official correct?

Answer: The official was correct. By rule the throw-in is at the designated spot nearest to where the violation occurred. (References: Rule 9.1 Penalties 1a, Officials Manual Diagrams 2.5 & 3.6)

Play #2 - Team A has the ball for an AP throw-in on the end-line. After A1 releases the ball on the throw-in, the ball is intentionally kicked by B1. The ball is awarded to Team A for a spot throw-in nearest to where B1 kicked the ball. After the throw-in is completed, the scorer reverses the arrow and play continues until the next whistle. The officials instruct the scorer that the arrow should still be pointing toward Team A's basket. Are the officials correct?

Answer: The officials are correct. The rule change for this season to how a throw-in ends states that the ball must be touched legally. Kicking (and fisting) the ball are examples of illegal touching. Therefore, the throw-in did not end and, as a result, the AP arrow is not switched. The 2nd throw-in is a result of the kicking violation and has no effect on the AP arrow. (References: Rule 4.42.5, Rule 6.4.4, Case Book Play 4.42.5 on pg. 3)

Play #3 - A1 releases the ball on a three point try. B1, in the lane near the basket in a rebounding position, backs out from the basket pushing A2 backwards and completely out of the lane. The try is good. The official calls a foul on B1, rules that the basket is good, and awards a one & one to A2 since this was the 7th team foul for Team B. Was the official correct?

Answer: The official was correct. By rule the foul by B1 has no effect on A1's try since the try is in flight. The foul is a common foul and is not a player control or team control foul. As such, since it was Team B's 7th team foul of the half, a one-and-one bonus free throw opportunity is awarded to A2. (References: Rule 6.7 Exception a, Rule 4.8)

Play #4 - A1 dribbles across the division line into frontcourt on the center official's side of the court. A1 changes direction and heads toward the trail's side of the court. As he is crossing into the trail's PCA, contact with B1 occurs. A double whistle results with one official signaling a blocking foul and the other signaling a player control foul. The AP arrow is pointed toward Team A's basket. What is the correct procedure?

Answer: The two foul calls result in a double foul. A1 and B1 are each assessed a personal foul. Each team has one foul added to its team foul total. By rule since it is a double foul, no free throws are awarded and this is a point of interruption play. Since Team A had team control of the ball at the time of the double foul, Team A will have a throw-in from the spot out of bounds nearest to where the ball was located at the time of the foul. The AP arrow is not switched. This play illustrates the importance of discussing in the pre-game conference how double whistles will be handled.
