2007-2008 - Plays of the Week - Week 5
"Working together, we will all get better."
The plays/questions described below occurred recently and are provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different. Have you seen an unusual play? Let all officials benefit from it by sending it to Plays of the Week
Play #1 - After A1 has released the ball on a free throw attempt, B5 steps into the lane early. The free throw attempt does not hit the ring. What is the correct procedure?
Answer: By rule this is considered to be a simultaneous violation by each team. Play is resumed by an AP throw-in from the out-of-bounds spot nearest to where the violations occurred. (References: Rule 9.1.3a, Rule 9.1.3g, Rule 9.1 Penalties 4b)
Play #2 - B3 disconcerts A1 while he is attempting a free throw. Subsequently the free throw does not hit the ring. What is the correct procedure?
Answer: Although A1 has violated by not hitting the ring, this violation is overruled by the disconcertion and a substitute free throw is awarded. (References: Rule 9.1.3c, Rule 9.1 Penalties 4c)
Play #3 - The clock is stopped with 9.6 seconds showing. Team A is leading by 2 points and A1 is awarded the ball for a throw-in on the endline. After the throw-in is released and before the ball is touched by a player inbounds, B3 is whistled for holding A3. As the official is reporting the foul to the table, he notices that there are 8.8 seconds remaining. What is the correct procedure?
Answer: This is an obvious timing error. The clock should not have run since the foul occurred before the ball was touched inbounds. The referee should order the clock operator to reset the clock to 9.6 seconds. (References: Rule 5.10.1)
Play #4 - B5 is charged with a foul for hitting A1 on the arm while she is shooting. It is B5's 5th foul. As the official is reporting the foul to the table, B5 is charged with a technical foul by a different official for arguing the call. The officials award A1 two free throws, award any player or eligible substitute on Team A two more free throws and award the ball out of bounds to Team A at the division line opposite the table. The Team B coach is allowed to continue to use the optional coaching box. Were the officials correct?
Answer: The officials were correct. Although B5 has 5 fouls, by rule she is not disqualified and does not become bench personnel until the Team B coach is notified. Therefore, the technical foul was on B5 as a player. The Team B coach can continue to use the optional coaching box. The officials will award A1 two free throws, award any player or eligible substitute on Team A two more free throws and award the ball out of bounds to Team A at the division line opposite the table. (References: Rule 4.14.2)
