2007-2008 - Plays of the Week - Week 4
"Working together, we will all get better."
The plays/questions described below occurred recently and are provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different. Have you seen an unusual play? Let all officials benefit from it by sending it to Plays of the Week
Play #1 - A1 is fouled in the act of shooting a three point try which is not successful. There is no timeout. The coach of Team B is talking with his players in front of the bench and refuses to have anybody occupy the lane spaces nearest the endline. The coach tells the official that his players will occupy those spots for the last free throw but are not required to be there before that. The official uses the resuming play procedure and administers the 1st free throw with no players in the 1st lane spaces. The official indicates a delayed dead ball violation situation as soon as the free thrower has possession of the ball. Is the official correct?
Answer: The official is NOT correct. By rule players from Team B must occupy the lane spaces when directed to do so by the official. Failure to do so is a technical foul charged to Team B. The only time this would not be true is during a resuming play procedure after an intermission or timeout. (References: Rule 10.1.5b, Case Book Situation 10.1.5 C, part b)
Play #2 - A1 is fouled by B1 while attempting a shot. The ball is rolling on the ring when B5 jumps and grabs the ring for no good reason. What is the correct procedure?
Answer: B5 has committed a basket interference violation. The goal is awarded to Team A. A1 is entitled to one free throw. In addition, B5 is charged with a technical foul for grabbing the ring. Any player or eligible substitute from Team A may attempt those free throws. Team A will be awarded the ball at the division line for a throw-in after the free throws are finished. No players will line up for any free throws. (References: Rule 4.6.1, Rule 9.11 Penalties 1, Rule 10.3.4, Rule 8.1.3)
Play #3 - With two minutes to go in the championship game of a tournament, A1 commits a foul and is disqualified. The official properly notifies the coach, tells the table to start the 20 second replacement interval and notifies A1 of his disqualification. When the final horn sounds for the 20 second replacement interval, the substitute is still talking to the coach and has not reported to the table. The official charges the head coach with a direct technical foul. Is the official correct?
Answer: The official is correct. By rule the coach is required to replace the player within 20 seconds. Failure to do so is a technical foul charged to the head coach. Of course, this results in the loss of the use of the optional coaching box. (References: Rule 10.5.3, Rule 10.5 Note 1)
