2007-2008 - Plays of the Week - Week 2

"Working together, we will all get better."

The plays/questions described below occurred recently and are provided for your review and discussion. The rulings given are based on NFHS rules. NCAA rulings may be different.

Play #1 - A1, on the wing away from the table, attempts a try with his toe touching the three point arc. The try is successful. The covering official rules it a two point goal. Play continues until B1 is fouled at the other end of the court. As the foul is being reported, the coach of Team A comes to the table and asks if the previous goal at his end of the court was a two or three point goal. The officials confer and rule that it was a two point goal. What is the correct procedure?

Answer: By rule Team A will be charged with a 60 second timeout regardless of how long it takes to determine that no correction will be made. If Team A has used all of its 60 second timeouts, then a 30 second timeout may be used. If Team A has no timeouts remaining, then an excess timeout should be charged at the expense of a technical foul. (References: Rule 5.8.4, Rule 5.11.3, Rule 5.12.2)

Play #2 - A5 is lined up in the 2nd marked lane space while his teammate, A1, is attempting two free throws. B5 is the lane space closest to the endline next to A5. During the second free throw attempt A5 fakes entering the lane. B5 (a) does or (b) does not enter the lane early. What is the correct procedure?

Answer: In (a) a violation will be called on A5 for causing B5 to enter the lane prematurely. Team B will be awarded the ball out of bounds on the endline nearest to A5. In (b) no violation has occurred and play proceeds normally. (References: Rule 9.1.3b)

Play #3 - A1 is driving down the lane and releases the ball on a try for goal. His momentum carries him out of bounds under the goal. The shot is not successful. In an attempt to secure the rebound, A1 jumps from out of bounds and grabs the rebound while airborne and lands back inbounds. The official rules this a legal play since A1 had been out of bounds legally. Is the official correct?

Answer: Although A1 is out of bounds legally, this has no effect on A1's status in relation to being inbounds or out of bounds. Since A1 jumped from out of bounds, A1 is still out of bounds when the ball is touched. Therefore, A1 causes the ball to be out of bounds. Team B should be awarded the ball out of bounds at the spot where A1 jumped into the air. (References: Rule 4.35, Rule 7.1.2a1, Rule 7.2.2,)

Play #4 - A1 is dribbling up along the sideline from backcourt to frontcourt. While A1's left foot is clearly touching in backcourt, A1 passes the ball to A2 on the other side of the court. The ball bounces in frontcourt and is then caught by A2 while A2's right foot is touching the floor in backcourt and his left foot is touching the floor in frontcourt. The official rules this legal play. Is the official correct?

Answer: The official is NOT correct. By rule the location of both A1 and A2 is in the backcourt. Under the backcourt rule a team in control is not allowed to cause the ball to go from backcourt to frontcourt and return to the backcourt without the ball touching a player in the frontcourt and be the first to touch the ball in the backcourt.
